Running a ‘community of enquiry’ discussion group

This is an approach to teaching in which learners participate in group focused on philosophical issues. Dialogues are prompted by a stimulus (for example, a story or video) and are based around a concept such as ‘truth’, ‘fairness’ or ‘bullying’. The aim of a community of enquiry is to help learners become more willing and able to ask questions, construct arguments, and engage in reasoned discussion.

Top tips: Think about how the topics you teach everyday as part of your curriculum relate to ‘big’ philosophical issues - these can form a great foundation to build a community of enquiry on.
